CHEMICAL PEEL FAQ

Though getting a chemical peel at Palmer Skincare is quite a ”Deal” price wise, there are a few facts that one should definitely be aware of before deciding to get a chemical peel.

What is a Chemical Peel?
A chemical peel is a quick treatment that is designed to basically achieve faster and more effective results than a traditional facial. Many people think that a chemical peel involves harsh acids being placed on the face which then makes one burned and unable to even leave the house without scaring their family and friends. Though these types of peels are offered in many Dermatologists offices, there are also many types of chemical peels that vary in strength and can be offered at non medical spas such as Palmer Skincare.
We offer a variety of peels that vary in their intensity. Some people may chose to receive a light Pumpkin or Retinol peel which have little to no down time. Some may choose to option for a heavier TCA or Lactic Acid peel which are stronger but they do require more post care and light recovery. All peels include 1-2 layers of product. Additional layers may be applied for maximum effect for an additional fee. Every person is different and Palmer Skincare will find the best peel to suit your needs. All peels include a free pre peel consultation prior to your first peel and an at home post peel kit after your treatment.

Who should get a peel?
Any person that wants to minimize the signs of fine lines and wrinkles, acne, rosacea, sun damage, pigmented skin and uneven skin tone.

Who should not get a Peel?

  • Pregnant Women
  • History of sun allergies or recent sun exposure or damage
  • Anyone with active facial warts or cold sores in the treatable area
  • Current use of Antibiotics which may cause skin to be ultra sensitive
  • Recent radiation treatment for Cancer Accutane use within the last 6 months
  • Prior adverse reaction to a chemical peel

Are Peels Painful?
Depending on the strength and which peel is chosen will determine this. A light chemical peel such as the Pumpkin or Retinol Peel will tingle or sting a little when applied but this is very mild and subsides quickly. A heavier peel is going to be more uncomfortable when applied but these peels are only left on for a very short period of time.

Is there pain after a peel?
With a light peel the skin may feel tight and look slightly red but this subsides very quickly. A heavier peel will be the same but after a day or so the skin will start to feel chapped and may feel dry and itchy. Depending on the strength of peel you receive, the skin will generally start to flake and peel off within 2 days .This generally can last 3-5 days depending on how sensitive your skin is. Though this process is not really painful it is more annoying and noticeable. The results are great after 3-5 days and a post peel kit is provided to lessen these effects and any discomfort.

Pre Treatment protocols
Before getting a heavier peel one must make sure they have properly prepared the skin for this procedure. These steps help ensure better results from the peel and help avoid any potential damage to the skin.
Before an appointment refrain from:

  • Having a chemical peel (14 days prior) – results will be unpredictable and may damage the skin
  • Tanning in a booth or extensive sun exposure (2-3 weeks prior and post treatment)
  • Having a wax or chemical depilatory treatment (7 days prior)
  • Getting Botox or dermal fillers (7 days prior)
  • Using Retin-A, Retinol, Differin, Tazorac and glycolic acid products (5-10 days prior)

Post treatment protocols
After receiving a peel it is crucial that the following steps be followed. The skin at this point is very sensitive and can easily be irritated, damaged or hyper pigmented (scarring).
After an appointment refrain from:

  • Directly placing face in hot water (2-3 days)
  • Steam rooms, saunas and hot tubs (7 days)
  • Participating in activities or exercise that cause heavy perspiration (5-7 days)
  • Tanning booths and minimal to no sun exposure (use an SPF of at least 25+ if outside)
  • Picking or pulling any loose skin.
  • Do not use any scrubs or exfoliants.
  • Using Retin-A or any of the other products listed in pre treatment section (10-14 days)
  • Having any facial injections or fillers (7 days)
