A Journey of Pride, Community, and Authenticity: Palmer Skin’s 18 Years in Hillcrest

San Diego has been home to me for over two decades. I remember the early days of setting up Palmer Skin in the heart of Hillcrest, often referred to as San Diego’s “gay neighborhood.” Back in the day, walking into my establishment was a subtle nod to one’s sexuality. But times have changed.

Hillcrest, over the years, has evolved into a vibrant and diverse metro area. It’s no longer just the LGBTQ+ folks coming in for services. Families, straight couples, and individuals now seek to reside here, enticed by the tantalizing array of restaurants, bars, and an inclusive environment.

While change is inevitable and often beneficial, there’s an element of bittersweetness attached to it. A once predominantly LGBTQ+ neighborhood is now seeing its original community members being somewhat displaced, owing to rising living costs. Many now feel the need or the confidence to move to different areas of San Diego.

As a proud LGBTQ+ business owner, I’ve witnessed this transformation first-hand. Yet, one trend has always irked me: businesses targeting the “gay dollar.” These are typically straight-owned enterprises, often with conservative backgrounds, who market towards the gay community simply because they recognize our financial power. This opportunistic trend becomes glaringly obvious during Pride month when businesses everywhere churn out Pride merchandise.

Now, let’s be clear: supporting LGBTQ+ rights is imperative, and businesses playing a role in that is commendable. But there’s a line between genuine support and mere commercial exploitation.

Palmer Skin stands as a testament to authenticity. We are not just a business operating in Hillcrest; we are a part of this community. For 18 years, we’ve remained gay-owned, consistently supporting the community that birthed us. We take pride in hiring from within the LGBTQ+ community and ensuring our earnings circulate back into it. Personally, I’ve always believed in the power of community and make it a point to support LGBTQ+ businesses and initiatives, both locally and during my travels.

In essence, Palmer Skin isn’t just about premium skincare; it’s about authenticity, community pride, and a deep-rooted connection to Hillcrest and its incredible LGBTQ+ family.

To all our loyal customers and to the Hillcrest community, we thank you for your unwavering support over the years. We are here, we are queer, and we are proud. We promise to continue serving you with genuine care and authenticity. 🌈❤️
